How does the Wellness Center fit into Mission Possible’s overall vision for relational ministry?
Mission Possible connects the Body of Christ to serve urban communities in East Austin through spiritual, social and economic programs. We want to see lives transformed by Christ’s love incarnated among two (or a small group of) people who are engaged in relationships with each other.
As a believer becomes involved in the life of another person through a Mission Possible venue -- whether it be a child mentored in our after school program, or an elderly or homebound person served groceries through the BAGS program, or a homeless person befriended at Church Under the Bridge -- financial, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs inevitably surface. When that happens, the volunteer must discern whether or not the Holy Spirit is asking him or her to fill the need directly or to offer help through such things as compassion, encouragement, or prayer.
As we serve we can’t possibly fill every need we see, nor does God ask us to! But in scripture God DOES clearly command us to love others. The Bible says that Jesus often used the healing of the physical body to precede the healing of the heart. He loved certain people by meeting their “felt needs” while never failing to offer them the living water He knew they truly needed to be made well.
The Wellness Center is used best when it cross pollinates with our other ministry programs in support of the relationships being built within them with the homeless, the elderly, and at-risk youth and their families. It will also continue to be used regularly to fill some of the gaps in healthcare available to those vulnerable populations the Lord has specifically called Mission Possible (as an organization) to serve.
Teams from local churches are invited to "adopt" a day or evening in the clinic. A volunteer team comprised of 1-2 doctors and 2-3 nurses is needed to run the clinic. Other valuable roles are prayer counselors, nutritionists, dieticians, preventative education counselors, medical administrators, and volunteer mobilizers.
